Love Bites – and so did the 80s
Event on 2012-02-10 20:00:00
Pull out your neon sweatbands, tight roll your jeans, and buy a can of aerosol hairspray when the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco celebrates the awesomeness of the 1980s in their ninth annual cabaret and musical extravaganza, "Love Bites and so did the 80s" at 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, February 10th and 11th, 2012 at the Mission Cultural Center, San Francisco. Of course, it wasn't all "Flashdance" and "Bette Davis Eyes" which LGCSF aptly demonstrates as they eviscerate love songs of a certain decadent decade."If memory doesn't serve well enough, we also have high school photos, television shows, movies and music from the 80s to remind us that this decade was severely twistedand in this show we add a few more turns of our own," said William "Billy" Sauerland, Artistic and Music Director of LGCSF. "This is really an opportunity to allow the chorus to let their hair down, or in this case tease it out and spray it up." Bitter love songs, rock ballads, and choral medleys capture the musical contributions of Jon Bon Jovi, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cindy Lauper and many other great artists of the age. In collaboration with long-time LGCSF friend Michael Mohammed, the fully-choreographed chorus tribute to Michael Jackson will bring down the house. A noted Bay Area director, choreographer, and performer, Mohammed's production of Wilde Boys at the New Conservatory Theater was a 2008 Bay Area Critics Circle Award winner for Best Musical Production. The Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco is also excited to welcome guest emcee Countess Katya Smirnoff-Skyy, voted "Best Drag Act" in 2008 by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Once Eastern Europe's greatest Mezzo-Soprano understudy, the Russian diva is prepared to revisit her painful heartbreaks of the 1980s, from her love child with Liza Minnelli to her romance with William Shatner, all for the pleasure of the Love Bites audience. In addition to solos, small ensembles, and chorus numbers, "Love Bites and so did the 80s" includes a look back at television theme songs, featuring original videos by LGCSF. A "Family Feud" skit offers the audience the opportunity to take part in the show, and everyone will get to sing out and cut "footloose" to an electrifying 1980s soundtrack. This eighties dance party might just be the talk of the town until the 2080s! Tickets are – sliding scale general admission and may be purchased online at http://www.lgcsf.org or by calling the Brown Paper Tickets 24/7 Ticket Hotline: 1-800-838-3006. The show is expected to sell out, so interested patrons are encouraged to buy tickets in advance. The venue for "Love Bites and so did the 80s," the Mission Cultural Center, is located at Mission and 25th Streets; it may be reached by Muni lines 14 and 49 and is a short walk from the 24th Street BART station. Street parking is available in the neighborhood, and there is a small city parking lot at 24th street and Mission (behind McDonald's) as well as a larger garage at 21st street and Valencia (at Bartlett).
